Over a period of 27 years, Jay served as corporate litigation counsel for both Allstate Insurance Company and State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, and as retained counsel for several other companies while a partner in Birmingham, Alabama law firms. He eventually realized that helping individuals who were damaged by the wrongful acts of others was much more rewarding than defending rich and powerful corporations who prey upon the average citizen.

In September 2014, Jay accepted the position of Managing Attorney of Alexander Shunnarah Injury Lawyers, P.C., the largest plaintiff’s firm in Alabama, by number of lawyers, which is also the most prolific in number of trials, according the Alabama Jury Verdict Reporter. While there, he was able to utilize his extensive courtroom experience, familiarity with the Alabama legal system, and professional relationships built through years of practice to forge an effective team of litigators and advocates.

He joined AkinMears in September 2017.

Jay graduated from Cumberland School of Law, Samford University in 1986. He is a 2012 inductee into Best Lawyers in America® and was recognized in 2006 as the most prolific trial attorney in Alabama and the third most prolific trial attorney, 2002-2006, by the Alabama Jury Verdict Reporter. Jay is a previous member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of American Law (Civil Litigation and Procedure Specialty). He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Alabama Association for Justice from 2015-2017. Over the years, Jay has written numerous articles for legal publications. He served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Cumberland School of Law from 2014-2017 and has recently been awarded the authorship of the legal treatise, Alabama Civil Practice Forms.
