Veterans

may be at higher risk for asbestos exposure.

We appreciate your service to this country.

Veterans of the United States military have a much higher risk of developing an asbestos-related illness due to the large amount of asbestos that was used on ships, aircrafts, tanks and submarines. In fact, veterans account for approximately 30% of mesothelioma patients, and those who served between 1940 through 1980 are at an increased risk of developing health problems from their asbestos exposure.

Asbestos was frequently utilized by the military for wiring and pipe insulation, gasket and packing material in pumps and valves, brake and clutch pads in automobiles and tanks, and as blanket insulation around boilers, turbines, and generators.

Occupations with high exposure to Asbestos:

Boiler tenders, engine mechanics, firemen, ship fitters, plumbers, electricians, and industrial workers are a few of the occupations with large amounts of asbestos exposure, although veterans who did not work with asbestos directly may have been exposed through another facet of their service.

Am I at risk?

If you were a member of the military prior to 1980, it’s beneficial to inform your physician of your service and work history.  A majority of the estimated 22 million U.S. veterans were exposed to asbestos at some time during their service, and a portion of those may eventually be diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease. Asbestos-related illnesses can develop decades after exposure, so it’s important to monitor your health for early warning signs and alert your doctor if you notice any changes such as a difficulty breathing or a persistent cough.
