
Asbestosis Caused by Exposure to Asbestos
Asbestosis is a disease caused by accumulation of inhaled asbestos fibers. The fibers enter the lungs, irritate and inflame the lung tissue and cause scarring. Accumulation of asbestos fibers in the lungs causes scarring of the tissue which leads to breathing problems, which in time worsens to the point where is it difficult for oxygen and carbon dioxide to pass through the lungs.
Asbestosis is not a cancer, it is a disease which typically takes many years, after the initial exposure to asbestos, for symptoms to manifest. Asbestosis can be fatal.
