
Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer which can affect the membrane lining of the chest cavity, outside the lung (pleura) or the abdominal contents (peritoneum). It is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos.
Diseases linked to asbestos exposure are thought to kill over 10,000 American men and women every year. These diseases include mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis.
It typically takes years for symptoms of asbestos related diseases to manifest themselves and latency can easily be 20 to 50 years. Thus, many people exposed decades ago are just now being diagnosed and dying.
