DePuy Recalled from the Market

The widely used hip implants DePuy ASR XL Hip System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System were voluntarily recalled in August 2010 due to a high revision surgery rate in individuals who were implanted with this defective hip device.

The DePuy hip devices have been associated with the following injuries:

  • Revision surgery
  • Device loosening
  • Metal blood poisoning or high metal Ion levels in blood
  • Pain
  • Crunching or popping noises
  • Device loosening
  • Dislocation
  • Problems standing or walking
  • Swelling
  • Fatigue

The DePuy hip implant was marketed from approximately 2003 to 2010 and has been implanted in a total of about 93,000 patients. Many individuals with the defective hip implant have received a recall notice from their doctor or the DePuy implant manufacturer.
